Some of the most well-known logos are those that we see almost every day, whether it’s browsing online, getting our morning coffee, or even sitting in our very own car.  As it is known that the best logos are those that are most well-recognizable, you would think that it would be easy to remember the details of logos as big as Google, Youtube, or Microsoft.  However, BuzzFeed has created a quiz that proves we might not know these logos as well as we thought we did!

Giving you 10 logos with slight errors to identify in each, this quiz tests our ability to notice the details of what we see every day.  It may be easy to identify a well-known logo when placed next to a group of others, but what’s not so easy is picking apart the subtleties of each logo.  This is the recognition vs. recall pieces of our memory in play.  It is much easier for us to recognize a color, font, or placement of a well-known logo as being familiar to the eye, but when it’s not placed right in front of us and we are asked to draw it out, for example, the memory of many deems to be stumped.

At first glance, you may even think that these logos look normal.  Our brains are so used to automatically correcting small errors, like when there is a a typo for example (got ya!), that we often don’t even realize when something is slightly off.  So when we are presented with manipulated logos, it is difficult to pick out what is actually different about them.

Let’s see how well your memories serves you - take the quiz now to find out how good you really are at spotting errors in some of the most well-known logos to date!

DID YOU KNOW - the human brain can generate up to about 23 watts of power?! That’s enough power to light up a light bulb. Forget the myth that you only use 10% of your brain and let’s be real – you use all of it. Neurologists have confirmed that your brain is always active (even when you're sleeping! Absolutely bananas!). On top of that, information from your brain can travel up to 268 miles per hour and good golly my Volkswagen Jetta stands NO chance in this race! Why are we telling you these fun facts about your noggin? It is to show you that your brain has a big job, a 24/7 “no rest for the wicked” kind of job, so we must be sure to take care of it. Let’s show your head a little appreciation in comfort and style with some name brand beanies. Brands such as The North Face, Nike, Carhartt, and Spyder carry different colors and styles of beanies to help protect that crown of yours and help you gear up for your next winter weather campaign, holiday campaign, employee/customer gift, and/or any other reason you might need a beanie. NorthPoint has your noggin covered with Name Brand kind of style!

When creating a balanced and aligned composition, Illustrator guides are here to help you out.  Guides are essentially your fast pass to aligning text and graphics in the most confident and reassuring way.  No more worrying about whether or not your header lines up with your body text or if your grid of photos are perfectly spaced – guides have got you covered.  They will be there to assist you through the process of designing but will not print or export in your final piece.  They are simply there to help you when needed and can be turned on and off when needed or removed all together!

Adobe Illustrator comes with a built-in ruler system in which you can drag out vertical and horizontal guides to help measure and create a basic layout for your design. Access rulers quickly by clicking Ctrl+R or Command+R and start dragging! But what about the instances where you want to create a set of guides based on custom shapes? Any vector shape can be converted to a guide with one easy step (you heard that right - ONE)!

    Right Click > Make Guide.

DONE! Just like that! You can also create guides by going to View > Guides > Make Guides.  In this drop down menu, you can also choose to lock the guides, ensuring that they stay in place while you work, release the guides, converting them back to their previous vector shape, hide guides, to temporarily remove them from sight (this can give you a better look at what your final design will look like without the distraction of the guides over your composition), as well as clear guides, which removes them completely!

Tip: Create your guides in a separate layer so that you can easily toggle them on and off!

Custom shape guides are a great tool to use when creating templates, laying out the blueprint of your design, or even just perfecting the alignment of your composition.  Try them out when designing your next piece, and see how helpful they can really be!

Creating patterns is another one of those magnificent features of Adobe Illustrator that makes designing much more efficient and allows for a much more accurate set up when trying to create a balanced repeated design. Let’s say you are trying to create a beehive hexagonal pattern to add to the background of your design.  For some of you (and we have ALL been there), you may approach this by creating a hexagon with the shape tool and then copying and pasting until you have completely filled up your space.  Now this could certainly be one way to design a pattern in illustrator, but what I will say is that it is definitely not the most efficient, especially if you plan to fill up a large space with this pattern.

Let me take you through the very few easy steps to creating a pattern, along with some tips and tricks that make editing your pattern completely hassle free:

    Creating a Pattern

    1.  Create the object or design that you want to be repeated in your pattern.

    2.  Select the object and go to Object>Pattern>Make.  This will pull up pattern editing mode, where you will have access to the pattern editing panel and all of the different options when creating your pattern.  While you are in pattern editing mode, you’ll be able to see a preview of your pattern as you change the settings in the pattern options panel.  You’ll see that with this panel, you have the ability to name the pattern, choose a tile type or how the pattern repeats, size the pattern tile to the artwork, change the width and height of the pattern tile, set how the artwork overlaps, and more! Once you’re happy with the way your pattern looks, click ‘Done’ in the grey panel at the top of the screen to save the pattern to the swatches panel, where you’ll be able to apply it as a fill or stroke later on.

    3.  Apply your pattern to either the fill or stroke of an object by simply clicking on the object, choosing either the stroke or fill of the object in the properties panel, and then selecting your pattern in the swatches panel!

    Editing a Pattern

To edit your pattern, double-click the pattern swatch in the swatches panel to open up pattern editing mode again, and from here you can change the spacing, color, or anything else!

Tip: If you want to manipulate the pattern within an object without manipulating the object, open the transform panel and select ‘Transform Pattern Only’ in the options menu. Similarly, if you want to change the size of only the shape and not the pattern, select ‘Transform Object Only’.

(Shortcut: you can also hold down the tilde key and drag a pattern within a shape to only move the pattern, but this doesn’t work when changing the size of the pattern.)
