Whether its masking out a person or an object from a background or only selecting one piece of a large image, making quick selections in Adobe Photoshop is a task that designers use quite frequently.  But thankfully, Adobe has provided us with a variety of tools that can help make this process quite easy! From the beloved magic wand tool to the newer object selection tool, Adobe covers pretty much all of the bases when it comes to working with specific selections.  Let’s take a look below at the 4 tools that we have to work with and how they can be used to help make your life SO much easier!!

    1) Quick Selection Tool

Use the quick selection tool to quickly “paint” a desired selection.  As you drag, the selection expands and automatically finds and follows defined edges in the image. To get to the quick selection tool, click on the icon in your tools panel, or if hidden, hold down the magic wand tool or object selection tool to open the hidden drop-down menu and select from there.  In the options bar, you can select either the ‘new’, ‘add to’, or ‘subtract from’ buttons to choose what you’d like to do! (Shortcut: to quickly switch between add and subtract modes, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) key). You can also change the size of the of the brush by clicking the brush pop-up menu in the options bar. Finally, by checking the sample all layers box, you can make a selection based on all layers rather than one, and by checking the enhance edge box, you can automatically make your selection even smoother and more refined to the image edges.

    2) Magic Wand Tool

The magic wand tool is similar to the quick selection tool in that it also selects similar surrounding pixels, but it focuses solely on selecting areas of similar tone and color with as easy as one click!  It is perfect for when you need to alter a specific color throughout your project.  All you have to do is click on any pixel and the magic wand will find and select matching areas! The tool is located in the same drop-down menu as the quick selection tool, and also has a variety of options that go along with it.  Similar again to the quick selection tool options, you can easily add and subtract from your selection by clicking either ‘new’, ‘add to’, ‘subtract from’ or ‘intersect with’ buttons.

You are also able to specify tolerance in the options bar, which allows you to narrow or broaden the range of colors that are selected (super useful when only trying to select a specific shade of purple in an image, for example!) Checking the ‘anti-alias’ box will create a smoother-edged selection, just like the ‘enhance edge’ box in the quick selection tool options.  Checking the ‘contiguous’ box essentially forces the wand to only select pixels that are adjacent to each other rather than just selecting all pixels within the range of tolerance.

    3) Select Subject

Updated in the 2020 release of Adobe Photoshop, the select subject command selects the most prominent subject in an image with just one click.  This could include a group of objects if there are more than one in an image, or one if there is only one object in the image.  (This command is perfect for selecting subjects from portraits!) To access this command, go to Select > Subject, or click Select Subject in the option bar of any of the selection tools. To add or subtract from the selection, you can also use any of the selection tools’ add and subtract options to refine. If you want to fine-tune the selection even more, try going into the ‘Select and Mask’ workspace by choosing Select > Select and Mask and using the tools in the workspace accordingly!

    4) Object Selection Tool

Last, but certainly not least, is my personal new favorite tool.  Just like how the select subject command selects all of the main subjects of an image, the object selection tool goes even further to be able to only select a specific object in an image.  The tool is also located in the same drop-down menu as the quick selection tool and magic wand tool and can be added or subtracted on as well by using the option bar options.  Choose the rectangle mode or lasso mode, and simply drag a rectangle or draw a rough circle around the object that you want selected, and the object will be automatically selected! To add to your selection, select ‘Add to Selection’ and draw another rectangle or lasso around your additional object, and to subtract, use the ‘Subtract from Selection’ option and again draw another rectangle or lasso around the object you want subtracted.

Mood boards are a place where all of your initial inspiration and ideas can come together to help you eventually develop your project further.  They are usually a physical or digital collage of everything from color palettes to snip outs from a magazine, and they are immensely helpful in the brainstorming process for graphic designers (and people in other industries too!).  To put it in simple terms, a mood board is a way to visually organize your ideas in one place so that you can move from your initial thoughts to a first draft of a design seamlessly.

Mood boards are beneficial for many reasons, but for one, they are very helpful for YOU to create a strong and clarified vision from the start.  They are the perfect place to store your ideas right when you have them so that you’ll never forgot what you were thinking or why you were thinking it.  You can always refer back to your mood board throughout a design process to remind you of the path that you were aiming to go down and the goal that you wanted to achieve with your design.

Another extremely beneficial aspect of mood boards is that they help OTHERS.  They are great for sharing with clients early on in a design process to give them an idea of what you are thinking.  Instead of trying to explain what you plan to create, you can put together a mood board to illustrate what your ideas are and the direction that you are proposing to a client (Perfect for all the visual learners out there!).

It is common to include things like possible textures, illustrations, font choices, color palettes, and images in a mood board, like in this example below:

However, they can also be more general and aim to represent a theme or certain qualities that you or a client would like to communicate in a project.  This example below could demonstrate a “cozy and modern” theme almost solely through images.  Yet, even without any specific design elements, they can still spark creative ideas for the next step.

Inspiration can be drawn from absolutely anywhere, so your mood board certainly does not have to be limited to just design elements and design examples.  Inspiration can come from just about anything from fine art to food packaging to a street sign that you drove by earlier today.  No matter what area of life, if it sparked inspiration in you – add it to your mood board! The mood board below is a perfect example of this.  It covers different sources of inspiration from a magazine cover to a photo of roses, but also includes some design elements like a color palette, web design examples, and illustrations – all of which create a “mood” when shown together.

It also isn’t necessary to just create one mood board.  Try creating two or three to test out different themes for yourself or to propose to a client and then go from there.  This can actually save a lot of time when working with other people! But it can also save time when trying to figure out for yourself which route you want to go in.  If you’ve ever experienced the dreaded decision of having to narrow down your creative ideas to one theme, trust me – this will help alleviate that process!

As you can probably tell by now, there are no rules when it comes to mood boards, which is the beautiful thing about them.  There are no guidelines that you have to follow (unless you are working with a brand’s guideline’s, of course) or standards that you have to meet.  They are your home base for inspiration and yours to change or modify as needed.  One thing that is always true about them, though, is that they will always be beneficial to you and/or your client in the long run!

If you asked any designer what their favorite tool in Illustrator is, you may more often than not get ‘pathfinder’ as their answer.  As one of the biggest time savers and easiest ways to create unique shapes, the Pathfinder panel is widely popular amongst the design community.  With the tools in this panel, you can quickly and efficiently manipulate shapes and paths to create complex shapes instantly.

Adobe Illustrator’s Pathfinder panel consists of ‘Shape Mode’ tools and ‘Pathfinder’ tools, both which ultimately create new shapes from layering and manipulating multiple other shapes, but in different ways.  The shape modes alter the final shape of the objects by uniting, excluding, intersecting, or eliminating separate layers, which results in one new shape, while the Pathfinder tools break existing compound shapes into distinct paths rather than forming a new shape.

    Shape Modes

Let’s start from the beginning…to open the Pathfinder window, go to Window > Pathfinder, or click Shift+Control+F9.  In the top section of the panel, you will see the shape modes that we just talked about.  To apply a shape mode command, chose two or more overlapping objects and then click on the mode that you want to apply.

Tip: The great thing about Pathfinder shape modes is that they have alt-modes as well, which allow you to combine two or more shapes without destroying their original paths so that you can go in and use the direct selection tool to edit the original path further! Just hold down ‘alt’ when you are applying a shape mode and you’ll see that the original paths will still be accessible even though the shape appears to be one combined shape!

As we said before, the Shape Modes are used to create a new shape from previously layered shapes.  The four shape modes include Unite, Minus Front, Intersect, and Exclude.  Now let’s take a look at this cheat sheet below to better understand what each of these means.

    1) Unite: The unite action combines two or more shapes into one single shape

    2) Minus Front: Just as it sounds, this action eliminates any overlapping top shape layer and leaves the remaining cut out bottom layer.

    3) Intersect: Intersecting two or more shapes creates a new shape by leaving behind only the overlapping shape that is created by the overlapping layers.

    4) Exclude: Opposite of intersecting, the exclude mode eliminates the overlapping area and leaves behind the rest of the remaining shapes combined together.

    Pathfinders

The Pathfinder commands allow you to essentially break apart overlapping shapes into distinct paths by creating a group of non-overlapping closed paths or lines.  (Unlike the Shape Modes, however, pathfinder actions can not be undone or manipulated once applied.)

The six pathfinder modes include Divide, Trim, Merge, Crop, Outline, and Minus Back. Check out the cheat sheet for these to get a better visual of what each means!

    1) Divide: The divide action breaks the original two or more overlapping shapes into 3 (or more) distinct paths: the top shape, the overlap shape, and the bottom shape.

    2) Trim: Trimming overlapping shapes cuts away the top layer from the pieces of the bottom layers that are revealing.  Think of it like you are breaking apart the top shape from the bottom shapes and only leaving that top shape with the broken pieces of the bottom shapes!

    3) Merge: In a group of many overlapping shapes, this pathfinder is used to merge overlapping shapes with the same fill color while trimming the outlines of the other exposed shapes.

    4) Crop: Use this command to crop background shapes to the frontmost shape (like a clipping mask!)

    5) Outline: Just as it sounds, the outline pathfinder creates outlines of the shapes that can be individually selected.

    6) Minus Back: Opposite of “Minus front” command in Shape Modes, this action removes the bottom shape layer and its overlap, leaving you with only the remaining portion of the top layer.

Now that you have a more knowledgeable understanding of Pathfinder, try testing out these different tools the next time that you’re in Illustrator, and see how much of a time saver it really can be! No more shying away from projects with intricate and complex shape building – this is your solution. Not to mention that they leave your illustrations and shapes looking so much cleaner and sharper than trying to create the desired outcome by hand!

To our fellow creatives – have you ever wondered where your creativity came from? How is it that some people have the capacity to think so much more creatively than others? Why us? While the actual answer to this question remains a mystery, we do know that creativity involves the combination of specific personality traits, behaviors, and thinking styles. It is proven by neuroscience that our brains are literally wired differently.

The main unifying characteristic of creative people, however, is our complex way of thinking.  We are known to change our roles and ways of thinking constantly, going from one extreme to the other all the time.  Yet even with our complexity, we still have a core personality that shows through the most.  In an attempt to define this core personality, Adobe Create has teamed up with creative agency Anyways, a group of UK designers and developers, and a creative consultant to put together the ultimate creative brain “personality test”.

In the words of Carolyn Gregoire (writer and creative consultant), this test aims to identify the core personality in each of us and shine a light on the inner workings of different creative personalities types in a way that might help us better understand ourselves, our creative process, and our potential. And again, while you may be labeled one as one type of creative from the result of this test, all creatives truly consist of small amounts of each creative type…after all, we are constantly changing and shifting in our thinking! This test just helps you better understand who you are as a creative at this point in your life.

As part of this ‘Creative Types’ test, sets and props were created to go along with the 15 questions and 30 possible answers to serve as a physical representation of the feeling or experience that goes with each question and response. Three-dimensional characters were then thoughtfully created to represent each of the 8 different creative types.  When your creative type is revealed at the end of the test, your accompanying character will appear as well!

Curious to see what creative type you really are? Will you be The Artist, The Thinker, The Adventurer, The Maker, The Producer, The Dreamer, The Innovator, or The Visionary?

Take the test and find out!!
