    5 Brochure Design Tips

    1. Know Your Purpose
    Purpose
What do you want to accomplish with this brochure? What's the main objective? Who's your target market? These three questions will influence the design, construction, and layout of your brochure.

Before you start designing, sketch out the flow of the entire brochure so you know what content you will need for each page.

    2. Write and Review Your Copy
    Copy
When writing your copy, remember to only include what is essential. Your reader wants to get through all of the information in a short amount of time. Don't risk them skipping over sections due to excessive filler text. Also be sure to include a call to action - this ties into the goal of the brochure. Lastly, remember to always proofread your content, nobody likes a typo!

    3. Construction
    Construction
Now that you have your copy and sketched layout, this will help you determine the number of pages you need, which could influence your binding technique.

Is your brochure short enough to be a folded piece of paper, or do you have quite a few pages? Saddle stitch is the most common and cost-effective binding technique for multiple pages. This method requires your page count to be a multiple of four to work. However if you want a more premium look or have too many pages, perfect bound is the way to go. If you prefer your pages to lay flat, or have a page count not divisible by four, spiral bindings may work best.

Pro Tip: When designing for perfect bound or spiral bindings, remember to make your inner page margins larger to make up for the lost space.

Remember to also consider paper weight and texture. Thicker paper will feel more premium, whereas thin, practically transparent paper will feel cheap. Consider how construction will affect the reader's perception of your company as well. Will your paper be glossy, silk, or matte? Will you have spot gloss, or even soft touch coatings?

    4. Use High Resolution Photos
    Photos
Good looking product photos will go a long way. Make sure they're bright, colorful, and consistent. When budget or time is a factor feel free to use stock photos. But the trick is to be sure that they don't feel like stock photos. High resolution photos with a DPI of 300 or more will print just fine, don't settle for anything less. Pixelation isn't good for your brand!

    5. Follow Your Brand Guidelines
    Brand Guidelines
Be sure to stay on brand by following your brand guidelines with font and color choices. Don't have a concrete set of design rules? Just determine your color palette and fonts before you begin designing. A good rule of thumb is to try and limit your fonts to only two or three max.

    Additional Considerations:
Do you need a table of contents?

    How about page numbering methods?

Is your design theme creative and fun, or more serious and corporate? (You don't want a high-end looking brochure for a charity, but you would want a good looking product catalog to stand out from others at a tradeshow)

Consider all design elements such as photos, graphics, charts, patterns and other accents so each are consistent throughout.

    The Golden Ratio

Have you ever looked at something and found it aesthetically pleasing but didn't know why? It's quite possible that's because it was designed using the Golden Ratio as it's underlying structure.

From hurricanes to flower petals, the mathematical ratio of 1:1.618 is commonly found in nature. For at least the last 4,000 years, people have also incorporated this concept in with art, architecture, and graphic design to appeal to your subconscious. Even today, it's a useful tool to take advantage of to create balance and harmony.

    The Golden Ratio

When applying this idea to a design, it's often represented as a spiral, rectangle, or circles. First you create a square, giving you the base proportion of 1:1. If you then divide the square by 1.618, you now have the next step to add to your square. Continue adding squares, and add an arc to the outer edge of each square to give you the spiral.

    The Golden Ratio

Have a look at some of the examples below to see how the Golden Ratio was used in each real life instance:

Try to actively incorporate this ratio in your designs and see if you notice a difference. Have any questions about this topic or need some design help? Reach out to NorthPoint's Design Team!

    NorthPoint's 100th Blog Post

We're interrupting your regularly scheduled blog post to bring you this important message...

On any other Thursday morning, you'd be sitting at your desk, sipping your coffee, avoiding your inbox, and reading some amazingly creative and informative blog stemming from something in the design world. It might be related to using Photoshop, picking out color palettes, or even coming up with a new logo design. But not today. Today you're stuck here with boring old me, Editor In Chief of the NorthPoint Blog.

However that's because today is just a little bit different. Why you ask? Because today is NorthPoint's 100th blog post! That's right, this post is our 100th and instead of going with our normally scheduled Thursday morning programming (our Pixels To Print blog) I thought I'd give our Design Team a break for once and change things up. So today, I'd just like to simply say thanks!

    NorthPoint's 100th Blog Post

First of all, I wanted to say thank you to you, that's right you! Thank you to all of you readers, clients, and random people out there who got here by accident. Thank you all for following along with us on this journey and most importantly, reading and interacting with all our blogs. When we first started the NorthPoint Blog, I was only a young lad and the blog was just a way for us to post different industry statistics. We were never really sure if anyone out there was actually following along or reading anything that we posted. Since then, (and with your help) the blog has grown and developed into a useful, fun, and informative marketing tool. So thank you to all of you wonderful readers out there for all of your input, feedback, suggestions, and compliments over the years. Without you, none of this would be possible!

Next up, I wanted to give out a special thanks and show some recognition to my very hard working Marketing & Design Teams! These are the people who work hard day in and day out to ensure that (on top of everything else that they do) the Pixels To Print and Hot Item Of The Week blogs come out on time and looking amazing every week. You may not know this, but a lot of work goes in behind the scenes at NorthPoint to create this content each and every week. Between the first drafts, second drafts, third drafts (I can be picky at times), brainstorming topics, finding the latest hot items, and creating graphics for every blog, you can probably imagine that there's a lot to do. Without this hard working squad, there's no way we could put out as much grade-a content as we do. So Marketing and Design, give yourselves a hand! (and now get back to work.. Just kidding!! But no seriously, get back to work...)

Last but not least, I'd also like to say thank you to everyone else at NorthPoint who doesn't directly work on the blog, but assists our team through suggesting ideas, sharing our posts, and giving us feedback. You all rock!

Alright, that's more than enough from me. See you all again in another 100 posts!

We'll now return to your regularly scheduled program...
